When a tooth has been compromised by decay, fracture, or other damage, it can be restored with a dental crown. Crowns allow us to keep the healthy portion of the tooth intact while removing the damaged portion and replacing it with a restoration that functions, feels, and often looks just like your natural tooth. By saving a tooth rather than simply extracting it, your bone structure is preserved and the adjacent teeth remain stable.

The process of getting a dental crown involves two separate appointments. During your first visit to our office, your tooth will be prepared by removing the compromised areas of your tooth and decay, and refining the portion that remains so a crown can be fitted. A 3D scan  is taken of your prepared tooth and it is sent to a dental lab, where a skilled technician fabricates your permanent crown. While waiting for your final restoration, you’ll be given a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth.

Next, you’ll come back to our office when your restoration is ready. We’ll make sure it fits properly, then use resin cement to bond it to your prepared tooth.

At Metrowest Prosthodontics, our materials of choice for dental crowns are porcelain and zirconia. These metal-free options appear natural and blend in with your smile perfectly. When a tooth near the back of the mouth is missing or for patients who grind their teeth, we may opt to use a gold alloy material for added durability.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

Are zirconia crowns toxic?

Absolutely not—zirconia crowns are non-toxic, FDA-approved, and completely safe. In fact, zirconia crowns are popular in holistic dentistry because they are made with ceramic material and they are chemically non-reactive.

What is the best type of crown?

Every patient has different needs and there are different types of crowns to fit them. For a patient who clenches their jaw or grinds their teeth at night, a crown made of Zirconia, is the best fit for its superior strength. Patients who need a front tooth crowned opt for Full Porcelain or Zirconia, for the most natural appearance. We’ll help you choose the best crown for your needs.

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns usually last about 15 years, depending on the material used, the location of the tooth, and your oral hygiene habits. It’s not uncommon for crowns to last decades or even a lifetime with good care and maintenance.

Is a crown better than a filling?

Crowns are used whenever there is too much tooth decay to be repaired by a dental filling. If a large portion of a tooth needs to be removed due to decay, the most effective way to restore it is with a crown because it’s stronger than a structurally compromised tooth.

Is it painful to have a crown put on your tooth?

No, it is not painful to have a crown put on your tooth. When your tooth is being prepared for your crown, it will be numbed to ensure that you don’t experience any discomfort while we work. After the procedure, you may have some sensitivity and soreness, but this can be relieved with over-the-counter pain medication.
