Top 10 Invisalign Questions and Answers

Team Invisalign

Invisalign is a popular alternative to traditional orthodontic treatment, which is why we’re pleased to offer it to our patients at Metrowest Prosthodontics. Rather than using a system of brackets and wires to reposition the teeth, Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners that gently shift your teeth into proper alignment. If you’ve been wondering if Invisalign is right for you, we’ve answered some of our patients’ most common questions below.

Am I a candidate for Invisalign treatment?

The only way to know for certain whether you’re a candidate for Invisalign treatment is to come in for an evaluation. While there are some orthodontic cases where Invisalign is not a good fit, these days even complicated bite issues can be treated with Invisalign thanks to its advanced SmartTrack technology.

Is Invisalign expensive?

The cost of Invisalign is often comparable to that of traditional metal braces, and less expensive than other discreet orthodontic treatment options like lingual braces and ceramic braces. Your dental insurance may provide coverage for Invisalign, so it’s important to remember the total cost of Invisalign might not be what you end up paying out of pocket.

Does Invisalign work as well as traditional metal braces?

Yes, if you are a candidate for Invisalign, you can expect it to work just as well as metal braces to correct your bite and misaligned teeth.

What are the benefits of Invisalign over other options?

Invisalign has a number of benefits when compared to traditional braces. These include:

  • Easier brushing and flossing because your aligners can be removed when needed. This means better oral hygiene.
  • Your friends, co-workers, and classmates won’t even know you’re wearing aligners because they’re virtually invisible.
  • There are no food restrictions with Invisalign. Unlike with braces, you can eat whatever you want, including popcorn, gum, chewy candies, and nuts.
  • Invisalign is more comfortable than traditional braces. Your aligners are made with smooth, thin plastic, producing little-to-no irritation.

What are the disadvantages of Invisalign?

The main disadvantage of Invisalign is that your aligners only work when you wear them, while braces work 24/7. This doesn’t pose a problem for most patients who wear their aligners as directed, but if you take them out often and for extended amounts of time, you’ll have a lengthier treatment. With Invisalign, compliance is more of a factor than with traditional braces.

How long do I have to wear my aligners each day?

You’ll need to wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, but we recommend simply keeping them in all day long except to eat, floss, brush, and clean them.

If I don’t have wires to tighten, do I still need to come in for regular visits with Invisalign?

Yes, you’ll have to come in every four to six weeks so we can ensure that your teeth are moving as planned. You’ll never need to make an emergency appointment to replace a bracket or fix a wire with Invisalign, though!

How should I clean my aligners?

We recommend the Invisalign Cleaning System to remove bacteria and food debris from your aligners. Alternatively, you can gently brush your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of hand or dish soap, then rinse them in warm water (hot water can warp the plastic).

Do Invisalign results last a lifetime?

After your Invisalign treatment is complete, you’ll receive a set of Vivera retainers to keep your teeth in their new positions. Just like any other orthodontic treatment, your results only last if you maintain them!
